Samosas, or ‘sambusa’ as they are called in certain parts of the world, started in central Asia and the Middle East and then spread to India and the rest of the world. They are now very common in India and you can buy them almost anywhere there. They can have different shapes. They can be a half-moon, a triangle, or a cone.

They are dough on the outside and have a savory (salty) filling inside. The filling generally consists of potatoes, but sometimes you can prepare samosas with meat, chicken, or lentils as well. They can be baked or deep-fried in oil.

Steps: there are four main steps to cook samosas.

First, to make the dough, mix the flour and salt together and then add the oil or ghee and mix well for 5 minutes until you have no crumbs in the mixture. You can use your hand to mix. Now, it is recommended to let the mixture rest for half an hour. Then add water slowly and mix again until you have a dough. The dough should not be hard or sticky. It is essential to cover the dough and let it rest for a while before stuffing.

Second, while the dough is resting, we can start making the filling. Boil the potatoes in water and when they are ready mash them with a fork. After that, put the spice seeds in a pan with some oil and fry them for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Add the green chili and peas and cook for about a minute. Add the spice powder and stir for a further minute. Finally, add the mashed potatoes to the mixture and mix thoroughly. The filling is ready. Do not use the filling while it is hot; wait until it cools down.

Third, it is time to form typical samosa wraps. Do not panic! It is easy and simple to make half-moon samosas. Divide the dough into 6 balls. Roll out the balls to form a circle. Then put the filling on one side of the dough and wrap the other side so that you have a half-moon shape. Make sure you seal the sides very well by pressing with your fingers.
The last step is frying. Heat the oil and start frying on medium heat until your samosas are golden brown. Serve them hot with tea and enjoy this tasty appetizer!

Are samosas healthy?

Some argue that samosas are unhealthy because they contain a lot of carbohydrates and are also deep-fried in oil. However, the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has recently said that they are healthier than burgers. The center explained that samosas contain no additives, all ingredients are natural and fresh.
