- 1-kilogram potatoes
- 2 tablespoons flour
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon dried oregano
- parsley leaves, finely minced
- Pepper, to taste
- Cheddar cheese, finely grated (optional)
- Basil (optional)
- Salt, to taste
- Oil for deep frying
Method and tips for preparing
⦁ After you peel the potatoes, cut them into quarters or even smaller. They do not need to be perfectly cut. Cover them with cold water for 5 minutes to get rid of the starch.
⦁ Shred the potato pieces by using a grater. I recommend a blender at this stage to make your job easier. Remove any large pieces. Put the potato pieces on a kitchen towel to get rid of any excess water. Leave aside until you finish the next step.
Some recipes recommend cooking the potatoes before grating or blending, but wasting time and effort on this step is not necessary.
⦁ In a deep bowl, mix the flour, paprika, onion powder, oregano, pepper, salt, and parsley leaves together beside any optional varieties you like. The seasoning is ready to use now.
⦁ Move the potatoes into the deep bowl that contains the flour and the seasonings and combine thoroughly using a fork or a spatula as the mixture will be sticky.
⦁ Time to form your tater tots. You can do that using your hand. To avoid them sticking to your hand while shaping them, keep a bowl of water nearby to wet your hands. It will work.
⦁ To bake them in the oven for a healthier meal: place them on a baking sheet. Bake in a pre-heated oven for about 20 minutes until you get crispy golden brown tots. Do not forget to flip each and every piece using two forks.
To fry them, heat the vegetable oil first and once it is hot enough fry your tots until they become crispy and golden brown in color. Do not forget to flip them. Air frying can also do a perfect job with a little oil.
Whether you decide to bake, deep fry or air fry, you will get perfect and satisfying tots.
It is possible to freeze tater tots after you form them before cooking or after they are ready to eat.
