What does the word ‘tikka’ mean?

Tikka means ‘cubes’ or ‘pieces of boneless chicken marinated in a special marinade and grilled on skewers. Obviously, it is similar to tandoori chicken but different in that the chicken pieces are boneless.
Let’s cook chicken tikka together


⦁ 500 g boneless, skinless, and cubed chicken breasts
⦁ Half a cup yogurt
⦁ 1.5 tablespoon flour
⦁ I diced onion
⦁ 1 green or red pepper
⦁ 1 tablespoon oil
⦁ 2 tablespoons lemon juice
⦁ 1 tablespoon grated ginger
⦁ 1 tablespoon garlic
⦁ Half a teaspoon of the following spice powders: red chili powder or paprika, pepper, coriander, cumin, turmeric, garam masala
⦁ Salt to taste


⦁ Cut the chicken into pieces or cubes suitable to be skewered later. Put them in a large bowl and leave them aside.
⦁ Let’s now prepare the marinade. It is a key step that guarantees great flavor and texture. In a bowl or a blender, add the yogurt and all the other ingredients together and mix very well. After mixing, you can taste the mixture and add salt, lemon juice, or any other spice powder if needed. Add the mixture to the chicken pieces and mix well. Cover the bowl and leave it in the refrigerator for at least 5 hours. If possible, leave it overnight to allow the chicken to get all the nice flavors. In restaurants, they usually marinate chicken tikka overnight.

  • Get the chicken tikka out of the fridge and cook the chicken. You can cook it using a grill, a barbecue or an oven. To grill it, prepare a tray with a foil piece on it, then put a rack on top. Now, put the chicken cubes on skewers and you can also add some cubed vegetables to get grilled with the chicken pieces. Now, everything is ready to go into the oven. Grill the chicken in a pre-heated oven for about 15 minutes. After that, brush the chicken cubes with the marinade and grill for another 15 minutes. This lets the chicken tikka stay moist, not dry. Then brush chicken tikka with oil and leave them for about 2 minutes. Now, check if they are done and get them out of the oven.
  • If you like smoky flavor for your dish, burn charcoal until red and place it in a small bowl with some oil, and put it with the chicken in a closed pan for a few minutes. Enjoy the barbecue flavor!
